Dr Kapila Vatsyayan passed

Dr Kapila Vatsyayan passed away yesterday morning. She was a leading scholar of Indian classical dance, art, architecture, and art history. She was formerly a member of parliament and also served as Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Education, where she was responsible for the establishment of a large number of national institutions of higher education. She served as the founding director of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. She was former President of India International Centre (IIC) and an IIC Life Trustee and the Chairperson of the IIC International Research Division. She was 91.

Kapilaji was a true doyenne of the arts and culture great stature, commitment , she believed in debate, discussion and dissent and an all encompassing world view she could be fastidious with some, but at the same time a very encouraging person.

Prabhat had the privilege of having her presence at the ‘Like Us’ exhibition held in August 2019, at the India International Centre, New Delhi. May her dear soul rest in everlasting peace and may we in these times follow the exceptional path she lay down for many. Heartfelt condolences from the entire Prabhat family.

Do we need a reason to smile!

Let me introduce you to Arkam, an 11 year old young boy. He is getting his rehabilitation under the home-based programme of Prabhat. Which means he has multiple disabilities which makes it difficult for him to come to Prabhat’s Centres.

Despite all the difficulties which surround him, Arkam never stops to smile, every time you look at him he is smiling and such a contagious smile I tell you!!

When we first met Arkam, he could not sit up on his own, but today he not only sits up but also tries to engage in conversations.

As he smiles his way to learn new things, we hope you can smile without a reason today!

A mass media experience

How much do we know our city? How much do we know about the people co-existing with us in the same geographical expanse? How much do we know about the issues gripping our fellow Ahmedavadis? How much are we ready to do for pressing problems affecting the people in our city? To address a very specific but not a small issue – ‘disability’ in the above context a fifteen day campaign was conducted with a commercial radio channel in collaboration with Prabhat Education Foundation. Prabhat works for the cause of disability in the western part of Ahmedabad in areas which most of us would not even have heard of. They serve children and people with special needs by providing rehabilitation facilities (therapy, academic) and aids and appliances. They also address a very important component of counselling and guiding parents, families and local communities of children/people with disability to accept them as a respectable part of the household and the society at large.

The campaign started in the first week of April, the Radio station took the case study of one child as the pivotal story, through which, they then dwelled deeper into the cause of disability. Simultaneously an online fundraising page was set-up to generate funds for Prabhat’s work through the campaign. In four days since the campaign started the organization was able to gather a large chunk of money, which was not only overwhelming but also inspiring. There were several wonderful stories of local citizens stepping up to help raise funds. One such inspiring story was of an 11 year old boy living in a posh locality, who went door to door to collect money for the cause and was able to gather 10,000 rupees! A young boy in his twenties contributed the money he got to treat his friends for his birthday. Many young school and college going children contributed their pocket money and also motivated their friends to do so. There were people who called in and expressed their shock to know that the conditions were so bad for people living in the same city, abject poverty along with disability and considered the campaign as an eye opener and as a motivation for them to do much more for people in difficult situations.

The campaign ended with a whopping collection of funds for the cause of disability, which was not the only reason to celebrate but the response the warmth the concern and the want to do much more for this cause which was echoed from all over the city, people from different walks of life was so much more to take away from this campaign. One of the biggest lessons that we learnt from this campaign is that everyone has a role to play to make the invisible visible and with the reach of mainstream media a sea of change can be foreseen!

A day at Prabhat

A group of five students from Gandhinagar Institute of Techonology spent a day with Prabhat’s children at the Danilimda Centre in Ahmedabad. Sharing their experience:

Zarna Palera
When I came here I did not have any idea of how to handle a special child or how to deal with them. Initially I was very afraid to talk to them but as I started conversing with them my fears were gone. Special children are very difficult to handle but once you extend a friendly gesture they become comfortable and open up more with you. I realized we really should care for them that is why they are called special because they need our special love, care and attention. It is good if we give them our time, it feels like we are contributing to the society and which is good feeling to have!

An experience in Danilimda ward, Ahmedabad

Danilimda Ward in eastern Ahmedabad is challenged by poverty, poor living conditions and, inadequate services. Prabhat started its Community-based Rehabilitation (CBR) effort in this area with support and guidance from donors and partner organisations in 2011. This followed a survey of persons with disabilities in this area, and with a particular focus on children with special needs.
